Hawks stun nationally ranked UNC Pembroke

MURFREESBORO – It took 15 games into the season to secure the first win, but head coach Bryan Hill will take it as the Chowan baseball team upset nationally-ranked UNC Pembroke in the final game of the series, 9-7, here Sunday afternoon.

Warren Bailey led the attack going 3-3 at the plate with a home run, intentional walk, and two RBI. Christian Bartholomew, Tyler West, and Jackson Dunlap picked up two hits each. Bartholomew led with three RBI, while Dunlap hit a home run.

Cody Ives picked up the win on the mound. Jayden Bailey secured the save.

UNC Pembroke would break the deadlock in the top of the fourth inning as the Braves hit a three-run home run to lead 3-0.

Bailey would respond in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo shot to left field to cut the deficit to 3-1.

UNC Pembroke pushed the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth before the Hawks would rally.

Caleb Karie started the rally with a walk and stole second. Geomar Santana and Aidan Feather drew walks to load the bases. Bartholomew hit a bloop single to right to plate Karie and Santana. Bailey hit a sacrifice fly to even the score at 4-all.

The rally continued when Carrington Williams doubled to right center to score Bartholomew before coming around to score on West’s single up the middle. Dunlap would hit a no-doubt home run to right center to put the Hawks up 8-4.

The Braves rallied in the top of the sixth inning with three runs off one hit to cut the deficit to 8-7.

The Hawks would keep UNCP off the scoreboard and would add an insurance run in the eighth inning as Karie drew a walk to start the inning. Bartholomew doubled down the right field line that allowed Karie to score to lead 9-7.
