BARCO – After spotting their hosts a 7-0 lead, Hertford County roared back, scoring twice in the first quarter en route to a 29-7 win at Currituck County High School here Friday evening.

With their second straight win, the Bears improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 inside Northeastern Coastal Conference action.

The home-standing Knights struck first, scoring on a 66-yard run by Traveon Powell at the seven minute mark of the first quarter. Noah Simpson booted the PAT for a 7-0 advantage.

That lead didn’t last long.

Taking over at their own 20 yardline after the ensuing kickoff, the Bears struck quickly as quarterback Tye Saxby tossed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Devin Edwards. Israel Powell added the two-point conversion run and Hertford County had an 8-7 lead.

Hertford County’s defense set up the next score when Dorienne Young recovered a Currituck fumble at the Knights’ 30 yardline. A few plays later, Bryant Williams rushed three yards to the endzone. Saxby ran in the conversion, increasing the Bears lead to 16-7.

The Bears padded their lead to 22-7 in the second quarter thanks to Saxby’s 29-yard touchdown pass to Williams. The conversion failed.

The only score of the second half came with less than a minute to go in the third quarter. There, Williams raced 76 yards to the endzone on a punt return. Charlie Thompson booted the PAT kick to account for the 29-7 finale.

Hertford County is scheduled to wrap-up its regular season with a pair of home games vs. non-conference opponents.

On Thursday, April 1, the Bears will host Northampton County at 6 p.m. They will host KIPP Pride Charter School at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 9.
