CONCORD – John Earl Barnes, 60, of Concord, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, March 21, 2021.

Mr. Barnes was born February 13, 1961 in Hertford County, North Carolina to the late Earl Clingman Barnes and the late Ellen Clark Barnes.

Mr. Barnes spent 27 wonderful years married to his wife, Sonya. He absolutely loved being outdoors, playing with his grandchildren and grand pups, planting his garden every year, watching the Carolina Panthers play, watching his grandchildren play sports, and vacationing with his family.

He was also preceded in death by his mother, Ellen Clark Barnes, his father, Earl C. Barnes, and his nephew, Sgt. Willie Atlas “Claw” McLawhorn Jr., as well as his beloved dog, Buster.

Survivors include wife, Sonya Barnes of Concord, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Jimmy Smith of Concord, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and James Hill of Concord, NC; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Addie Layton of Concord, NC; granddaughters, Kayla Smith and Taylor Smith; grandsons, Dylan Smith, Landon Shaw, Matthew Layton, Samuel Layton; brothers, David Barnes and Kelly Chanoine; sisters, Diane McLawhorn, Debbie White, Barbara Byrd, and Sherry Harrison; and several nieces and nephews.

No funeral service is planned at this time, but a celebration of life will take place later.
