JACKSON — On target.

Those two words describe the proposed local budget Northampton County Schools is submitting to the Northampton County Board of Commissioners for their consideration before May 15.

On Monday, the Northampton County Board of Education approved to pass their $3.80 million current expense budget as well as a $345,000 capital outlay budget for the upcoming fiscal year to the commissioners for their consideration.

Of the $3.80 million, current expense appropriation from the county would be $3.55 million while fines and forfeitures would stand at $80,000, indirect cost at $125,000 and fund balance at $42,000.

The figures are reflective of those in the county’s budget formulation presented in February by County Manager Wayne Jenkins. In that formulation, the school district would get a total of $3.84 million with $3.5 million going for current expense and $345,000 targeted for capital outlay.

Assistant School Superintendent Phil Matthews presented the budget at Monday night’s meeting.

The local current expense budget includes $382,922 for classroom teachers and $177,161 for Central Office administration and athletics at $249,348.

Plant operations stands at $1.37 million while the Board of Education has a budget of $200,000, the superintendent’s office at $30,740, the assistant superintendent’s office at $14,300 and supplementary pay at $362,498.

Board member Erica Smith-Ingram moved to approve the current expense budget and the motion was seconded by Donald Johnson. The motion passed without objection.

The capital outlay budget includes $35,000 for non-program contingency, $110,000 budgeted at the board’s discretion and $200,000 for reserved funds.

Vice Chairwoman Marjorie Edwards moved to accept the capital outlay budget and the motion was seconded by Johnson. The motion carried without objection.
