AHOSKIE – An Ahoskie man tragically lost his life less than a half-mile from his home near here late Friday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident.

Larry White, 66, was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash in the 300 block of Jernigan Airport Road.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper B.S. Beard said that White was operating a 2002 Chevrolet Corvette shortly after 6 p.m. that was westbound on Jernigan Airport Road.

Beard’s report showed White’s vehicle veered off the right side of the road and then re-entered the lane of travel at which time the driver overcorrected. That caused the vehicle to cross the centerline, where White lost control.

The vehicle, Beard said, then traveled off the right side of the road again, this time striking a ditch and overturning. The vehicle came to rest on its roof against the base of a utility pole.

Other than losing control of the vehicle, Beard said there were no other contributing factors to the accident.

“The speed of the vehicle just prior to the accident was actually under the posted limit,” he reported.

The fatality was the third of 2020 within the NCHP’s Troop A / Division II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). Two of those fatal wrecks have been in Hertford County.
