AHOSKIE – A three-alarm house fire here Thursday night left two residents uninjured, but without a place to live.

Ahoskie Fire Chief Mike Bradley said the blaze was reported at 10:42 p.m. at a two-story residence split into three apartments, located on the corner of West Church Street and Colony Avenue.

“We were on the scene within two minutes at which time the entire rear of the residence was showing heavy fire and smoke,” Bradley said.

He added that two of the three apartments were occupied at the time of the fire.

“There was one person living in each of the apartments,” Bradley stated. “They both were able to get out without any injuries. We contacted the American Red Cross who comes in and offers assistance for fire victims.”

The apartments, which the Fire Chief said are a total loss, are owned by Jim Ellis

Bradley said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“The fire did threaten homes on either side, but we were able to contain it fairly quickly so there wasn’t any damage to those other homes,” Bradley noted.

The Ahoskie Fire Department had three units and 17 firefighters on the scene with the last unit clearing at 3:01 a.m. Mutual aid assistance was provided by the Union Volunteer Fire Department (two units and 12 firefighters) and the Winton Volunteer Fire Department (two units and eight firefighters).

“We thank those two departments for their response, as well as assistance at the scene provided by the Ahoskie Police, Hertford County EMS, and the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office,” Bradley said.
