Rebels rout Wilson

WINDSOR – Brandon Beach didn’t need to click the heels of his ruby baseball spikes three times and repeat, “There’s no place like home”, on Friday night. The big Williamston slugger celebrated Post 37’s first home game of the season here by spearheading a five RBI night as the Rebels pounded Wilson Post 11-1 for their sixth straight win without a loss.

Windsor got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when Turner Griffin reached on a two-base error. After being sacrificed to third, Griffin scored on Cameron Stevens’ base hit and Stevens later scored on an RBI single from Alden Cottle that made it 2-0, Rebels, after two complete innings of baseball.

The Rebs got three more in their half of the fourth when Cody Stalls singled to left field, but wound up on second base when the ball was misplayed. Stevens then got his second hit of the night followed by a walk issued to Cottle to load the sacks. Beach proceeded to unload them with a double into the gap in left-centerfield that cleared the bases to make it a 5-0 Windsor lead after four.

Wilson got on the scoreboard with their only run of the game in the top of the fifth. It was unearned when a strikeout victim who’d reached on a passed ball later crossed the plate on a bases-loaded hit batsman.

The Rebels then batted around in the bottom of the sixth, securing the victory. The offensive onslaught came from a walk by Austin Scott, a single by Cottle, a no-doubt home run by Beach over the centerfield fence, an error on a ball put in play by Jarrett Burden, and a double by Wood Trowell. Nine men came to the plate and six of them scored.

Cottle, playing with five stitches inside his mouth after taking a ball to the face Sunday at Bear Grass was credited with the win. He went four and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out four and walking one. Stalls threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen, recording the last four outs to earn the save for Post 37 Rebels 17U.

Nathan Woodard took the loss for Wilson. He allowed four hits and five runs over five innings, striking out one.

Windsor collected a dozen hits on the day. Stevens was 3-for 4 while Beach and Cottle had two hit apiece. Trenton White, Caleb Damo, Scott, Trowell, and Burden all had one hit each.

“It was great to play at home,” said Windsor coach Bobby Harmon. “We hit the ball well, but I also have to credit the fact that we’ve got good speed, and we ran the bases well tonight. It’s a good win, especially with four games coming up for us next week, but at least three of them are at home.

Post 37 is now 6-0 on the season, 5-0 in conference. They will get in their home date with Ahoskie tomorrow (Wednesday) night before a road game Thursday with Albemarle. Sunday they’ll wrap up the week hosting a doubleheader against Wake Forest.
