Lady Hawks bounce back from slow start to rout rival Eliz. City State

MURFREESBORO – Chowan University’s women’s basketball team picked up a 66-36 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks improve to 11-4 overall with the victory.

Elizabeth City State came out firing after opening the first quarter with a 12-0 run. After trailing 12-8 at the start of the second quarter, the Hawks clawed their way back from the deficit.  With 3:43 remaining before halftime, Danielle Weldon hit a free throw to ice the contest at 17-17.   After battling down the final stretch of the first half, Mariah Coker drained back-to-back three pointers to push the Hawks ahead 26-20 at the break. 

Chowan built on the momentum early in the third quarter and never looked back.  The Hawks carried a commanding 43-23 advantage into the final ten minutes of play before closing out the contest with the 30-point victory. 

Dhyamond Crenshaw, coming off the bench, paced the Hawks with 13 points with Jordan Payne adding 12.  Chantel Roberts and Weldon paced the Hawks with six rebounds apiece.  The Hawks caused 38 Lady Viking turnovers while shooting 35 percent from the floor. 

Jalyn Brown tallied nine points for Elizabeth City State in the setback.

The Hawks traveled to Winston Salem State University on Jan. 16 for a rescheduled game with the Lady Rams.  Wednesday night they are back on the road at Virginia State.
