AHOSKIE – Inez Dempsey Overton, age 87 of Ahoskie, passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Vidant Roanoke-ChowanHospital.

She was born in Hertford County on March 16, 1926 to the late Van and Gracie Dempsey. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and was secretary of Children’s 1st – 3rd grade Sunday school class for over fifty years.  She loved her work as a volunteer at Vidan tRoanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Besides her parents, Inez was preceded in death by her husband of over 65 years, John Wilson Overton.  Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Brenda Overton Languirand and her husband, Mark, of Baton Rouge, LA and Cindy Overton Jarman and her husband, Daryle,  of Angier; a son, Tony Overton and fiance’ Shari Gibson of Ahoskie; two grandsons, Mark Languirand, Jr. and his wife April of Kenner, LA, and Michael Languirand and his wife Kerri of Walker, LA; a granddaughter, Leslie  Lambert and her husband Steven of Angier; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Rachel Morris and her husband Leroy of Aulander, Troley D. Doughtie of Winton, and Gertrude D. Davis of Ahoskie; and a brother, Stanley Dempsey and his wife Faye of Spring Lake. Inez is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including special niece Debbie Magette. Special thanks to close friends and neighbors for your acts of kindness during this time.

A celebration of life memorial service was held on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, with the Rev. Dr. Daniel Glaze officiating.
