MURFREESBORO — The boil water notice for those connected to the town’s water system here has been lifted.

According to a press release signed by Murfreesboro Mayor John Hinton, members of the Murfreesboro Town Council rescinded the boil water notice that was issued November 5.

The decision by the council comes based on a recommendation from the Public Water Supply Section of the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources and additional testing of the water system.

“This action was based on laboratory analysis of water samples collected throughout the distribution system and wells,” the release stated. “Water users are hereby notified that it is no longer necessary to boil water used for human consumption.”

The town’s water customers are recommended to flush the piping in their homes between five and fifteen minutes.  Additionally, the town’s Public Works personnel will continue to conduct extra testing to assure the safety of the water. 

The release said the system has been flushed completely and an increased disinfectant residual is being maintained throughout the system.

On Thursday, a problem with the town’s water system was found during routine testing for the month of November and a boil water advisory was issued. Additional testing revealed the presence of E. coli/fecal coliform bacteria in the town’s water system, prompting a drinking water warning and boil water notice. 

Furthermore, in the press release the council commended “the extraordinary and pro-active efforts” of the Public Work’s staff during the event. 

“We are appreciative of the Fire and Police Departments for joining the Public Works Department in delivering this notice to your homes and businesses,” the release said.

In addition to the water contamination issue, Public Works staff had to deal with water main breaks due to the recent bout of cold weather.
