Alice Sumner

AHOSKIE – Alice Virginia Ray Sumner, 77, of the 400 block of NC Hwy 561, died Friday, March 27, 2009, at her home.
Mrs. Sumner was born in Bertie County, NC, a daughter of the late William and Lottie Daniels Ray. She was a member of Hickory Chapel Original Free Will Baptist church and was retired from the Hertford County Public school system, working in food service. She was the widow of Cecil Lawrence Sumner, Sr.
Left to cherish her memory are her sons, William Raby Sumner and Cecil Lawrence Sumner, Jr., both of Ahoskie; two brothers, Charles Turner Ray and Horace Floyd Rhea, both of Ahoskie; and a granddaughter, LeighAnn Sumner of Pendleton, NC.
Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Sumner was predeceased by a brother, William Edward “Bud” Ray.
A celebration of life service was held on Monday, March 30, 2009, in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert May and Rev. Michael Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Sumner Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home.
