Betty Johnson

Betty Mann Oglesby Johnson, age 80, of Roebuck, S.C., passed on to heaven on March 30, 2009.
Betty was born on August 27, 1928 in Laurens, S.C. to the late Thomas Hendrix and Ethel Mann Oglesby. In time, her family moved to Roebuck, where she graduated from Roebuck High School. She married Pat Johnson on May 31, 1947 after graduating from North Greenville Junior College.
Betty filled the role of a pastor’s wife as she began raising three children. In 1959, the family moved to Bangladesh as Southern Baptist Missionaries. They returned to the states after serving in missions for 10 years.
When Betty and Pat settled in Chapin, S.C., Betty went to work for DHEC in Columbia, S.C., working until her retirement. During that time, she attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina.
After their retirement, Betty and Pat moved to her parent’s former home in Roebuck. She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church in Spartanburg, S.C.
Betty is survived by her husband, Reverend Patterson “Pat” Smith Johnson; a son, David Johnson and his wife, Joyce, of Murfreesboro, TN; her daughters, Diane Kirby and her husband, Larry, of Clemmons, NC and Elaine Shook and her husband, Nick, of Windsor, NC; a brother, Frank Oglesby and his wife, Nancy, of Roebuck; a sister, Helen Coleman of Roebuck; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by a brother, Charles Oglesby, and her brother-in-law, Kenneth Coleman.
The funeral service was held Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Dunbar Funeral Chapel conducted by Reverend Brian Speer and Reverend Larry Wayne Kirby, II. Interment was held at Heritage Memorial Gardens following the service.
