NORFOLK, VA – Bernard Spalding, 96, of the 200 block of E. Lorengo Avenue, Norfolk, VA, died peacefully in his sleep May 9, 2024. Born in Norfolk, he was the son of the late John C. Spalding and Annie Crump Spalding.

Bernard lived a long healthy life as a loving supportive husband and father and a devout Catholic. He was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, a former member of the Civil Air Patrol and Commemorative Air Force. He served his country in the Army Air Corp as a radar operator. Even as a licensed pilot, he would spend hours watching planes fly when he wasn’t flying them himself. He retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad after a 46-year career as a clerk.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Jessie Spalding; daughter, Theresa (Bill) Hawkins; sons, Michael (Eleanor) Spalding, and William Spalding; youngest daughter, Patricia Spalding; grandson, Chris Hawkins, and great-granddaughter, Carleigh Hawkins.

A graveside service was held Friday May 17, 2024 at Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach.
