HCHS captures top honors

ELIZABETH CITY – Hertford County High School male and female student-athletes competed in the 2024 Northeastern Coastal Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship Meet.

The event was held May 2 at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City. There, the Hertford County Men’s Track & Field Team finished in first place overall with a combined score of 140 points. The HCHS Women’s Track & Field Team combined their efforts for 71 points, which was good for third place overall.

All totaled, HCHS brought home 33 medals.

“We competed against some great student-athletes representing the 2A and 3A schools in our conference,” said HCHS Track & Field coach Orrin Gatling.

“The Golden Rule this year was embarrassment is not a choice,” Gatling continued. “These young adults are working beyond any expectation anyone may had them under this year. Day in and day out we putting in work. I’m unorthodox I’ll admit, but we not an ordinary team, we are family. With leaders like we have Gianni Gomez, Demarion Barnes, Jada Lloyd, etc. our accomplishments are because of them.”

On the boys side of the conference meet, the following HCHS student-athletes captured medals:

200 Meter Dash

Silver – Kunari Tann (22.55 seconds)

Bronze – Natorian Gatling (24.03 seconds)

110 Meter Hurdles

Silver – Romello Robertson (15.93 seconds)

Bronze – Isaiah Bishop (16.93 seconds)

300 Meter Hurdles

Gold – Romello Robertson (41.86 seconds)

4×200 Meter Relay

Silver (1:31.97)

4×400 Meter Relay

Bronze (3:46.38

High Jump

Gold – Rimiez Williams (6’ – 0”)

Silver – Javy Melendez (5’ – 10”)

Long Jump

Gold – Gianni Gomez (22’ – 0”)

Triple Jump

Gold – Gianni Gomez (40’ – 10”)

Silver – Jamel Stephenson (40’ – 04”)

Bronze – Marcus Askew (38’ – 07”)

Shot Put

Silver – Keveon Rodgers (40’ – 11.5”)

NOTE: Several male HCHS student-athletes placed fourth in their respective events, to include Rimiez Williams in the 100 Meter Dash (11.14 seconds); Josiah Powell in the 200 Meter Dash (24.03 seconds); Wayne Futrell in the 400 meter dash (53.72 seconds); Nathaniel Harrell in the Long Jump (20’ – 0.25”); Xzaviah Lassiter-Reid in the Shot Put (37’ – 09”); and the 4×800 Meter Relay team (9.26.75).

Bronze – Jaliyah Mitchell (17.66 seconds)

Silver – Jaliyah Mitchell (4’ – 08”)

Shot Put

Bronze – Adarielle Townsell (31’ – 5.5”)

NOTE: Several female HCHS student-athletes placed fourth in their respective events, to include Acaisia Weaver in the 200 Meter Dash (26.94 seconds); and Jameilya Lewis in the High Jump (4’ – 08”).

The top performers from the Northeastern Coastal Conference will advance to the NCHSAA Eastern Regionals.
