Gatesville man dies in motor vehicle accident

GATESVILLE – A two-vehicle collision near here April 25 resulted in the death of a Gatesville man.

The mishap occurred shortly before 8 a.m. at the intersection of US 158 and NC 37.

There, according to a report filed by North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper E. Lujan, Camron Anthony-Scott Hooten, age 21 of Gatesville, was operating a Dodge passenger car north on NC 37. Meanwhile, a dump truck, driven by 54-year-old Jeffrey Rountree of Hertford, was traveling west on US 158.

Trooper Lujan’s report showed that Hooten’s vehicle failed to stop at the intersection and was struck by the dump truck. Hooten died at the scene.

Rountree was not injured.

The collision closed off the intersection for a short period of time, forcing traffic to be re-routed.

Other first responders responding to the accident scene included Gates County Rescue, Gatesville Fire Department, Gates County Sheriff’s Office, Gates County Emergency Management, and the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The fatality was the eighth of the year within the NCHP’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates, Hertford counties). Two of those fatalities have occurred in Gates County.
