AHOSKIE – Rachel Ann Blowe Young, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend to many, went to be with her Lord on April 20, 2024. Affectionately known to her family as “Mammy”, Rachel was born in Ahoskie on May 30, 1939. She was one of two daughters born to William Franklin Blowe and Mattie Lassiter Blowe.

Rachel graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1957. As a teenager, she worked at The Soda Shop in downtown Ahoskie, where she met the love of her life, Carroll Young. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary in November 2023. As a young mother, Rachel was employed at the Alamac Factory in Ahoskie. She later assisted Carroll with various business ventures: Young’s Furniture, Young’s Supermarket, and the Little Liz Restaurant. She served as bookkeeper for Young Brothers Building Contractors and later Carroll Young Building Contractor and Rentals. She served as a volunteer on the Roanoke-Chowan Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and with the Ahoskie Food Pantry.

She was a member of Early’s Baptist Church, where she loved attending church, taught children’s Sunday School, assisted with Vacation Bible School, and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Union (WMU). She enjoyed making sweets and baking countless cakes for both church events and family gatherings.

Rachel’s happiest moments were spent with family. She loved having everyone gathered for meals, holidays, and special occasions. She and Carroll enjoyed traveling with friends and going on various bus trips. She also enjoyed watching television in the comfort of her home. Her favorite shows were soap operas, particularly the Young and the Restless and the Bold and the Beautiful, the Andy Griffith Show, and Lifetime and Hallmark movies.

Along with her parents, Rachel is predeceased by her sister, Geraldine Blowe Bryant.

Rachel is survived by her husband, Carroll; three daughters, Lisa Young Outlaw and husband Scott of Ahoskie, Becky Young Cale and husband Doug of Winterville, and Donna Young (Doughtie) Pittman of Manteo; four grandsons, Brian Outlaw and wife Victoria of Ahoskie, Blake Outlaw and wife Abbigail of Greenville, Jason Cale and wife Morgan of Fuquay Varina, and Brent Doughtie and wife Brittney of Manteo; two granddaughters, Kathryn Paige Outlaw of Ahoskie, and Lauren Cale of Grimesland; and seven great-grandchildren, Peyton and Waylon Outlaw, Avery, Emerson, and Harper Cale, Reagan, and Parker Doughtie.
