AHOSKIE – Roanoke-Chowan Community College (R-CCC) hosted an event on March 20 in honor of Women’s History Month: the Women’s EmpowerHERment Tea Party.

Held in the multipurpose room, this gathering brought together a diverse group of individuals to celebrate the strength, resilience, and impact of women.
The program commenced with a welcome from Carrington Dudley, Interim Director of Admissions and Student Life. Dr. Murray Williams, President of Roanoke-Chowan Community College, followed suit, emphasizing the collective strength that lies within each individual. Her words resonated with the audience: “As we share our stories, let us remember the power we hold when we stand united.”
Markee Watford, representing the Student Government Association, delivered a women’s history tribute.
“Women enrich our lives with boundless compassion, intelligence, and courage,” Watford noted.
The highlight of the event was the panel discussion titled ‘Spilling the Tea…How to Become an Impactful Woman in 2024.’ The panelists included Dr. Tabitha Miller, the newly appointed President of Martin Community College; Danielle Ruffin, the Dean of Student Services at R-CCC; and Chanel Sidbury, the Assistant Superintendent of Hertford County Public Schools.
Together, they engaged in candid conversations about empowerment, leadership, and breaking barriers. Their insights inspired both aspiring and seasoned women to embrace their potential and make a difference.
Throughout the conversation, Dr. Miller emphasized the importance of servant leadership. When asked about her perspective of becoming impactful woman, Dr. Miller stated, “being an impactful woman is about collaboration.”
Dean Ruffin advised, “Never be too big to ask for help,” and highlighted the value of seeking out opinions from trusted individuals.
Sidbury shared her approach to work-life balance: specificity. She identifies her personal desires and allocates time for those specific priorities. Her advice? “Be specific about the things that you really want.”
After the panel discussion, Dudley and SGA leaders Jade Pugh and Aniyah Rankins recognized several remarkable women by presenting awards. The honorees included Kim Schwartz, Teresa Jenkins, Sheila Porter, and Michele Garrett. Additionally, Dr. Williams received a special award on behalf of SGA and the R-CCC family.
Dr. Tanya Oliver, Vice President of Instruction and Student Services at R-CCC, closed the event by saying, “Let us continue to uplift and amplify the voices of all women, ensuring that their stories are heard, and their accomplishments recognized.”
