AHOSKIE – An intersection just south of the Ahoskie town limits along US 13 will undergo a transformation.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is proposing to change the intersection of US 13 and DT Road.

Currently, DT Road intersects US 13 at an acute angle, which has prompted numerous complaints from motorists using that intersection. NCDOT is proposing to move that intersection slightly north (towards Ahoskie) and realign it so DT Road intersects US 13 at a perpendicular angle (a “T” intersection).

“This will give greater visibility for traffic traveling along DT Road,” said Hertford County Interim Manager Kevin Patterson as he updated the board of commissioners about the project at their regularly scheduled meeting on March 18.

In an email sent March 1 to Patterson from Chris Slachta, NCDOT Division 1 Planning Engineer, Slachta said the current geometry of this intersection is not favorable for commercial vehicles, agricultural equipment, and provides somewhat of a hardship for motorists to see oncoming traffic while turning off DT Road onto US 13.

“The proposed realignment would bring DT Road basically perpendicular to US 13, allowing those utilizing the intersection a more traditional approach,” Slachta wrote in the email. “By realigning the intersection, the sight distance would be more favorable for users to visualize approaching traffic and would allow for more traditional movements on and from US 13.”

The project will be completely funded by NCDOT.
