AHOSKIE – Hertford County registered voters will see at least one name on the November General Election ballot for Register of Deeds.

And there may be more than one person vying for that elected position.

This week, Hertford County Board of Elections Director Shelia Privott officially certified Latia Lewter Wynn as an unaffiliated candidate for Register of Deeds.

Privott explained that unaffiliated candidates seeking local government seats in a partisan election are required to file paperwork with a county’s Board of Elections office and then submit a petition containing the signatures of at least 4% of all registered voters within that county as of January 1, 2024.

In Hertford County, 550 represents four percent of its registered voters.

Privott said she certified Wynn’s petition upon discovering it contained the names of 852 registered voters in Hertford County.

Privott added that Wynn is currently employed in the Hertford County Register of Deeds office.

Additionally, George Holley and Shelia Bruce-Simpson have expressed an interest in seeking the Hertford County Register of Deeds seat as unaffiliated candidates, according to information provided by Privott.

The deadline to submit a petition for this year’s General Election is 12 noon on March 5.

Privott also said that Deirdre Foote has a petition “in progress” in an effort to run as an unaffiliated candidate for the District 2 seat on the Hertford County Board of Commissioners. That seat is currently held by Ronald Gatling, who filed for reelection during the filing period in December 2023.

Hertford County’s incumbent Register of Deeds Melody Storey opted not to seek another term in office.

The names of certified unaffiliated candidates will not appear on the March 5 Primary ballot. Their names will be on the ballot for the General Election, which will be held Nov. 5.
