AHOSKIE – An accident this morning (Friday) involving a propane delivery truck and a car has shut down a portion of NC 461 between Union and St. John.

Hertford County Emergency Management Director Chris Smith told the R-C News-Herald that the delivery truck is leaking propane.

“We’ve shut down the road and called in a haz mat team,” Smith said.

NC 461 is closed from Union Road to Lewter Farm Road.

Smith added that there were no homes located within what would be considered as an evacuation zone due to the leak.

“We’re just waiting for the haz mat team to arrive and go forward from that point,” Smith said shortly after 9 a.m.

The accident was reported at 8:12 a.m.

Smith said he was unaware of any injuries to those involved in the accident. They were transported to ECU Health Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Smith added that he did not know when the road would be reopened.
