RALEIGH – An alleged effort by a local man to collect money fraudulently following a motor vehicle accident has led to criminal charges.

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced that Montavia Miguel Moody, 34, of Seaboard was arrested.

Moody was charged with insurance fraud and attempting to obtain property by false pretense, both felonies.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Moody of presenting a forged doctor’s note to Integon Insurance Co. after a car accident in an effort to receive payment of lost wages.

The offense occurred on July 22, 2023.

Moody was released on Jan. 23 by Northampton County officials under a $2,500 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear in Northampton County District Court on Feb. 20.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar go towards covering the cost of fraud. I’m fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”

If you suspect insurance fraud or other white-collar crimes, please report it, Causey said. You may anonymously report fraud by calling the N.C. Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division at 919-807-6840 or toll free from anywhere in North Carolina at 888-680-7684.
