Wilson, Askew power Hawks past Bulldogs

WILSON – RJ Wilson and Daylan Askew posted career-high scoring efforts here Wednesday evening to lead the Chowan men’s basketball team to an 89-73 win over Barton in Conference Carolinas East Divisional action.

Wilson posted his sixth double-double of the season with 25 points and 11 rebounds. It was Wilson’s third 20+ point outing of the season and matches a career-high.

Askew turned in his seventh 20+ point outing with a career-high 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting. The former Hertford County High School standout also added eight assists.

Preston Le Gassick scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half on 5-of-6 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Le Gassick added six rebounds and five assists

Aaron Ross came off the bench to haul in eight rebounds.

Cheick Traore returned to form with nine rebounds to move him closer to the Chowan’s Division II record, sitting 20 rebounds shy of the record of 506 held by Lando Morrison (2007-10).

Chowan shot 63% from the floor in the first half and connected for 10 three-pointers to jump out to a 49-33 at the intermission.

The Hawks held Barton to 18.8% (3-of-16) from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes.

Barton cut the deficit to single-digits (73-65) with 4:03 thanks to Chowan’s four-minute drought from the floor. But the Hawks countered with a 9-0 run over a 90 second span.

Chowan (8-5 overall; 2-2 in league play and 1-1 in divisional action) returns to the floor on Saturday, Jan. 6 on the road against Erskine. Tip-off is slated for 4 pm.
