SNOW HILL – Bertie’s varsity boys traveled to Greene Central High School here Dec. 2 to participate in a one-day showcase tournament.

The tourney allowed teams to play others teams that they would not normally compete against during the regular season. Bertie’s opponent was independent powerhouse Wayne Country Day School (WCDS) from Goldsboro. WCDS has a history of being known as a formable opponent and nurturing consistent playoff worthy teams. The Falcons would be tested in every facet of the game as a team and as individuals.

WCDS secured the jump ball and quickly went to work scoring a pleura of points and holding the Falcons to just two. Coach Rascoe called timeout in an attempt to make a few adjustments. After that time-out the Falcons were well on their way to a 54-44 victory.

WCDS could not adjust to the Falcons intensive full and half-court defense and unpredictable traps. Bertie’s defense forced turnovers and produced multiple opportunities for steals, which in return were converted into points for the Falcon.

WCDS just could not get back in sync. They spent more time trying to avoid potential turnovers and lacked the confidence they had earlier in basket attempts.

Falcons junior Zymiere Dempsey and senior Jah’Kelvin Rascoe were responsible for the majority of Bertie points. Dempsey cashed in 24 points by scoring three trifectas, five two-pointers and two free-throws. Rascoe donated 14 points thanks to his two treys and four two-pointers.

Bertie improved to 3-0 with the win.
