AHOSKIE – Mr. Littleton T. Askew, Sr., 106 years young, of Ahoskie NC passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, November 30, 2023 surrounded by his family. Known to many as “L.T.” or “ Mr. Lit”, he was born on October 20, 1917 in Bertie County to the late John Jackson Askew and Nonie Sessoms Askew during the time when: the average yearly income was $720, a postage stamp was 2¢, a gallon of gas was 22¢, a new car was $360 and Woodrow Wilson was the president of the United States.

At an early age he joined Piney Wood Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. With growth he became an active member and taught Sunday School. Starting with the youth (teenagers) class. He made his classes very interesting, challenging, and also making everyone focus and use their minds. Later he became the teacher of the adult women class. He enjoyed teaching/sharing the word of God. Mr. Askew is truly a man of God.

He was married to the late Allie V. Simons for 40 years and they were blessed with six children.

Mr. Askew was a Trustee-Emeritus and was the treasurer of the Trustee Ministry and the Sunday School. He served on the committee supervising the building of the new church and making sure everything would go in proper order.

Mr. Askew was a farmer who owned his farm and had his own business (L.T. Askew Country Store). His store had a variety of items other than groceries. If he didn’t have what you wanted, he would do his best to get it for you. His kindness was greatly appreciated by those who were at a low point in their lives. Color didn’t matter to him. He worked as a foreman at Basnight Tobacco Warehouse in Ahoskie and delivered newspapers and managed the mailroom for The News Herald printing company in Ahoskie, NC.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his son, Littleton T. Askew, Jr.; two brothers, John Askew and James C. Askew; two sisters, Gladys Grandy and Hattie Mitchell.

He is survived by his children, Lionel Askew, Deloris Edwards, Fletcher Askew, Ethel Askew and Belinda Askew; 9 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 8 great great grandchildren; 4 great great great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Jane Askew.
