HUBERT – Kevin Ray Kirkland, 55, of Hubert, passed away on November 23, 2023, in Jacksonville, NC. Born on January 9, 1968, in Franklin, VA, he was the son of the late Donald Ray Kirkland and Katheleen Belangia. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Josephine Raleigh Kirkland.

Kevin was a hardworking individual who took immense pride in maintaining a beautiful yard. His handyman abilities and knack for creating things with his own two hands were truly remarkable. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need, which is a testimony to his selfless and compassionate character.

Kevin was the type of person to live life on his own terms. He generously donated his time to remodeling the American Legion building and participating in Habitat for Humanity work in Hertford County. Home improvement projects and working at ACE Hardware in Murfreesboro, NC, brought him great joy. As a charter member of the Sons of American Legion Sq 102, he found camaraderie and a sense of belonging.

Kevin had a deep love for fishing and motorcycles, but nothing compared to his profound affection for the mountains and camping. These were the places where he felt most at peace, surrounded by nature’s beauty. Above all else, Kevin cherished his children and granddaughter, and his beloved dog of 17 years, Miss Pickles.

Surviving family members include daughter, Sierra Klaumann and wife, Kaylee of Hubert; sons, Brandon Able and husband, Carl of Maysville and AJ Kirkland of Hubert; grand-daughter, McKenzie Kirkland of Ahoskie; sisters, Ilene Kirkland of Scottsdale, AZ and Tania Ezell and husband, Freddie of Windsor; and his brother, Donald Kirkland of Ahoskie.

Others who mourn Kevin’s loss include his ex-wife of 25 years, Jamie Piland of Woodland; his friend, Nancy Futrell of Murfreesboro; stepfather, Fred Belangia of Ahoskie; step-sister, Teressa Rawls and husband Clay of Ahoskie; step-sisters, Nancy Chase of East Flat Rock and Ruth Ann Drew of Ahoskie; step-brother, James Raleigh and wife Cherry of Colerain; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and special friends.

Kevin leaves behind a loving family and many dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

A memorial service to celebrate Kevin’s life will be held at the American Legion Building in Ahoskie, NC on December 10, 2023 at 3 p.m. During this time of mourning, may we find solace in the memories we shared with Kevin and the impact he had on our lives.
