Chowan drops two close games

PEMBROKE – The Chowan men’s basketball team had a pair of scoring opportunities that failed to find their mark in the final seconds as the Hawks fell to Virginia State 73-71 in the UNCP Give Thanks Tournament here Sunday.

Preston Le Gassick missed a game-tying three-pointer with 11 seconds remaining. Daylan Askew grabbed the offensive rebound and went 1-of-2 from the free throw line before RJ Wilson missed the tip-in as time expired.

After starting the season 2-0, the Hawks have dropped their last three contests by a combined 11 points.

Askew posted his third 20-plus point outing with 23 points. Le Gassick chipped in with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Wilson added 10 points and six rebounds. Cheick Traore contributed with nine points and eight rebounds.

Chowan went 6-of-25 from three-point range while shooting 13-of-20 from the charity stripe.

The Hawks trailed by 10 (39-29) at halftime.

On Saturday, Chowan’s late run in the final two minutes of play came up just short in an 88-84 defeat against Columbus State.

Askew posted a season-high 25 points with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Wilson posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Skyler Davies added 13 points, nine boards and two blocks. Le Gassick chipped in with 12 points and seven assists.

Columbus State forced 14 turnovers for a plus-seven advantage in points off Chowan miscues.

Chowan, now 2-3 overall, heads to Raleigh to take on St. Augustine’s on Tuesday, Nov. 28. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm. The Falcons defeated the Hawks 87-82 in double overtime on Nov. 15 in Murfreesboro.
