AULANDER – A Kelford man was gunned down in the street here Saturday night.

Aulander Police Chief Eddie Hoggard identified the victim as 29-year-old Preston Jones. Hoggard said Jones was walking on South Commerce Street, near the railroad crossing, when shots were fired from a passing vehicle.

The police chief added that Jones died at the scene.

“It was a drive-by shooting,” Hoggard said, adding that the incident took place between 9:30 and 10 p.m.

“I do not have any information to share about the suspects or a make or model of the vehicle involved,” Hoggard said. “I’m hopeful that someone who possibly witnessed the shooting will come forward with that information.”

Hoggard said at least two residences in the 400 block of South Commerce Street suffered property damage from the gunfire. Fortunately, no one was injured in those homes.

“I would like to thank the Bertie Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina SBI for their assistance on Saturday night and their ongoing assistance to help solve this case,” Hoggard said.

Those with information to share can contact the Aulander Town Hall at 252-345-3541 or the Bertie Sheriff’s Office at 252-794-5330.
