AHOSKIE – Violet Christine Harrell Williams, age 102, of South Street, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023 at the ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Williams was born on May 2, 1921 to Edgar and Christine Mobley Harrell in Como, NC. Upon the death of her mother at age 8 and during The Great Depression she and her siblings were placed in foster homes in the area. Amazingly, they were able to stay in touch with one another. Violet was a devoted wife and mother spending her earlier years taking care of her sons. Once her sons graduated from college, she went to nursing school and worked in the emergency room at Roanoke Chowan Hospital until her retirement. She was loved by her family and friends and will be deeply missed. Violet loved gardening and caring for her home. Her last wish was to live at home during her final years and was supported by at-home care givers passionately headed by Marie Bell of Windsor.

Along with her parents, Violet was preceded in death by a son, Joe Dwight Williams; and her siblings, Stanley, Johnny, Carl, Irma Hillyard, Fannie Mae, and Gertrude.

Violet is survived by her son, Bennett Williams of Highlands, NC; a grandson, Benjamin Truston Williams of Atlanta, GA; along with many extended family and friends.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Anita Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends during a reception following the service at the funeral home. There will be a private burial at Highland Memorial Gardens.
