AHOSKIE – Rocky Mount based Ripe for Revival, in partnership with local State Farm Agent Wendy Ruffin Barnes, is taking on the issue of food insecurity in Ahoskie.

The pay-what-you-can Ripe for Revival Mobile Market is rolling into Ahoskie on Wednesday, August 16, stocked with fresh produce, proteins, dairy, eggs, and other food products the community might need.

In addition, free health screenings will be provided by ECU Health RCH-Wellness Center of Ahoskie (blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes checks).

The Ripe for Revival Mobile Market will be open from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 101 Academy Street (the State Farm Insurance office).

Ripe for Revival works directly with farmers to bridge the gap between farm excess and food access.

At Mobile Market check-out, shoppers are given a suggested total and the cashier will ask them to pay only what they are comfortable paying. For some shoppers, it may be all of their total, some, none or more (paying-it-forward). This allows shoppers to provide their families with nutritious, healthy food in a dignified manner.

According to the National Institutes of Health, in 2020 almost 15% of U.S. households were considered food insecure at some point in time, meaning not all household members were able to access enough food to support active, healthy lifestyles. And in North Carolina, statistics indicate over 1.2 million people are facing hunger.
