SUNBURY, NC – James Warren Hollowell, 73, of 1520 US Highway 158 East, Sunbury, died Wednesday, August 9, 2023 in his home where he was cared for by his family.

Mr. Hollowell was born in Gates County on December 9, 1949 and was the son of the late William H. and Frances Goodwin Hollowell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, infant Helen Marie Hollowell, Edna Mae Parker, and Catherine Chesson.

A millwright with International Paper in Franklin, VA where he worked for over 40 years, after retirement he worked part-time with the Gates County Emergency Management for three years. A faithful member of Beulah Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, was a member of the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class, and was active with the Men’s Brotherhood, he served his Lord by serving others through building handicap ramps for those in need, working with the Disaster Relief Organization, and taking several mission trips to Peru. Community service included his work with the Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department and the Sunbury Ruritan Club. James enjoyed the friendships he established by his membership in the North South Skirmish Association, studying and preserving Civil War period history.

Surviving is his wife of 54 years, Vicky Evans Hollowell, their children, Anita H. Winn (husband, Billy) of Gates, Helen H. Smith (husband, Doug) and John Wayne Hollowell (wife, Jeannette), both of Sunbury; two sisters, Mary Ellen Briggs of Sunbury and Faye Wiley of New Bern; a brother, W.H. Hollowell of Sunbury; five grandchildren, Evan Winn (wife, Chelsea), Casey White (husband, Sammy), D.J. Smith (wife, Haley), Riley Hollowell and Reagan Hollowell; and two great-grandchildren, Harper and Theodore Winn.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 13th, at 2:00 p.m. in Beulah Baptist Church and will be conducted by Pastors Greg Jernigan and Tom Hall. The burial will follow in Hobbsville Baptist Church Cemetery and will be conducted by longtime family friend, The Rev. Robert Jordan. Friends may visit with the family in the social hall at Hobbsville immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence.
