MURFREESBORO – Three victims were injured in a Saturday night drive-by shooting in Murfreesboro.

The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. on August 5 at the Speedway convenience store located at 604 East Main Street.

Murfreesboro Police Chief David Griffith said his department and other local law enforcement officials who helped out during the Watermelon Festival were conducting a post-festival meeting when they heard the shots fired.

“We were there within one minute of the call coming in,” Griffith reported.

At the scene, Griffith said the three victims had been standing outside of their vehicle while it was parked at the convenience store, and he believed they may have been putting air in the tires at the time.

The three victims were transported to the hospital where two were released that same night with minor injuries, and the third was transported to another hospital.

Two were juveniles and the other was 18 years old.

The bullets also caused damage to the Speedway property. Chief Griffith reported that the air pump and diesel tank were struck along with a glass window. But no other injuries were reported.

“We had a bunch of shell casings in the road,” Griffith said, “stretching from the Speedway to McDonald’s.”

The investigation is still ongoing, but Griffith said the suspect vehicle is a white four-door passenger vehicle. They are still reviewing camera footage of the incident.

Griffith stated it hasn’t been determined yet if the shooting was random or if the victims were targeted. He did say this appears to be an isolated incident as there hasn’t been any other similar crime activity in Murfreesboro recently.

Griffith thanked Hertford County Sheriff’s Office, Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, Ahoskie Police Department, Hertford County EMS, and EMS Director James Broglin for their assistance Saturday night.
