AHOSKIE – Joseph “Joe” Dwight Williams, age 78, of Forest Drive, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at the Three Rivers Health & Rehab in Windsor, NC.

Mr. Williams was born on August 14, 1944 to Benjamin and Violet Harrell Williams in Norfolk, VA. Joe was a graduate of Ahoskie High School. During his time at Ahoskie High, he was both a star in the classroom and in athletics, playing football, basketball, and baseball. He was the quarterback on the 1961 Ahoskie State Championship football team.

Joe entered NC State University in 1962 but dropped out to join the Air Force for four years. He remains an avid follower of NC State athletics, especially women’s basketball in his later years.

After service in the Air Force, Joe returned to NC State and earned a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then worked as an electrical engineer for Carolina, Power and Light in Raleigh until his retirement.

Joe was married to the former Joyce Bartholomew of New Bern before divorcing.

In his later years Joe moved from Raleigh to Ahoskie to assist with in-home care for his aging mother. Joe had a deep love of Poetry, reading, and animals.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Everett Williams.

Joseph is survived by his loving mother, Violet Williams of Ahoskie; brother, Bennett Williams of Highlands, NC; and a nephew, Benjamin Truston Williams of Atlanta, GA; and his beloved dog, Woody.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 2 p.m. at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Anita Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends during a reception following the service at the funeral home. There will be a private burial at Highland Memorial Gardens.
