AHOSKIE – Raymond Julian Hewitt passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 16, 2023. He celebrated his 95th birthday just five days before with most of his family there.

He was born in Bertie County, NC on June 11, 1928 to William Joseph and Bythia Leggett Hewitt.

In December 1949, he married Hazel Pauline Wiggins. They had six sons.

Raymond made his living repairing and painting vehicles. He worked for Chas. H. Jenkins before building and opening R.J. Hewitt’s Paint and Body Shop. He operated his shop almost 30 years before retiring so he could be home to care for Hazel.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, John, “Bill,” and George Hewitt; his sister, Josephine Boone; three sons, Steve, Joe, and Gary Hewitt; a granddaughter, Michelle Hewitt; and her child.

Raymond is greatly missed by three sons, Tommy, Jimmy (and Kim), Mike (and Bobbi) Hewitt. Also missing him are 17 grandchildren, Carla Gray, Johnnie Bryan, Billie Jilcott, Bridget Scott, Chris Taylor, Ray and Jesse Hewitt, Paula Odom, Jenny, Matthew, Adam, Zach, Brian, Kaley, Nathan and Allyssa Hewitt, and Kindrea Warren; 34 great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and their families.

A graveside service will be held at noon on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Stoney Creek Cemetery, Ahoskie.

Raymond’s family is thankful for all of his caretakers, especially Kim and Jimmy.

They are receiving friends at 322 Church Road, Ahoskie.
