WINDSOR – A local man here is facing new charges in a case involving sex crimes against children.
On Monday, Bertie County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested Johnny Thomas, age 49 of Windsor. Thomas was booked into the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $75,000 bond on the charges of two counts of indecent liberties with a child and one count of attempted first degree sex offense. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday for those charges.
Thomas was originally arrested on March 21, 2022 following an investigation of alleged sex crimes involving one child. He was charged with 21 counts at that time.
Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin said the case from 2022 remains pending in Superior Court.
Just after his arrest last year, the Bertie Sheriff’s Office issued a statement asking for anyone else that may have been a victim or is a witness to any incident involving Thomas to share that information.
Ruffin stated that several individuals came forward, reporting to be a victim of sex offenses and identified Thomas as the alleged perpetrator.
Ruffin said investigators with the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office conducted numerous interviews with those individuals and were able to bring the latest charges against Thomas.
“[Those] incidents took place when the victims were children; they are of age now and have come forward about the crimes,” Ruffin told the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald on Tuesday.
Ruffin added that the investigation continues. He encouraged those who may have been a victim or a witness to any incident that allegedly involves Thomas to contact the Bertie County Sheriff’s Investigative Division at 252-794-5330.
