UPDATED: Windsor PD officer involved in shooting placed on leave; SBI launches investigation

WINDSOR – A police officer here has been placed on administrative leave after shooting a female armed with a knife here Monday morning.

The unidentified female was taken to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville. Her medical condition is unknown.

In a press release sent today (Tuesday) by the Town of Windsor, the incident was reported at approximately 10:45 am at which time the Windsor Police responded to a call for a criminal trespasser at the Cashie Apartments, located on Sterlingworth Street.

Upon arrival, the police encountered a 22-year-old female armed with a knife. The press release noted that the female does not reside or work at the apartments.

“During the encounter inside the building, a single shot was fired by an officer, striking the female,” the press release stated. “Aid was rendered until Bertie EMS arrived to administer further emergency aid.”

The Windsor Police Department contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The press release stated that investigation is ongoing.

The name of the Windsor Police Officer who discharged their weapon was not released.

“The Windsor Police Department and the Town of Windsor are unable to release any further information or comment at this time,” the press release concluded.
