Chowan softball drops home twinbill on Saturday

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan softball team dropped their league twinbill (5-1 and 12-2) against Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas action here Saturday afternoon.

Chowan’s offense was quiet in the doubleheader, collecting three total hits. Megan Leon, Tessa Nicholson, and Kyra Helton each collected a hit. Caston Garland and Serena Riley each reached on walks.

Chowan would take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning of game one as Serena Riley was hit by a pitch and stole second. Nicholson hit a single to right center to plate Riley for the lead.

Emmanuel evened the score in the top of the third as a lead-off walk would lead to an unearned run. The Lions added a run in the fourth inning on a pair of doubles to take a 2-1 lead.

Katelyn Matheny was the first base runner since the second inning, after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch in the fifth inning, but was left stranded..

The Lions used the long-ball in the sixth inning to stretch their lead to 5-1. Emmanuel looked to start a rally in the top of the seventh, but Mckenzie Misenheimer tracked down a ball in the gap to thwart the attempt.

In game two, Emmanuel would take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Chowan would take advantage of the Lions’ misfortunes as Nicholson reached on a two-base error. Nicholson moved to third on a ground out before scoring on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Lions answered with a pair of runs in the third off three hits and an error to lead 5-1. Emmanuel stretched their lead to 8-1 in the fourth inning.

Chowan would get a run back in the bottom of the inning as Riley drew a walk before moving to second on a ground out and stole third. Leon singled to left to plate Riley to cut the deficit to 8-2.

Emmanuel would use a four run sixth inning to finish off the run-rule victory, 12-2.

Chowan is slated to take on William Peace in a 1 p.m. non-conference match up on Wednesday, March 22.
