CU softball soars on day two at Fast Pitch Dreams Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Chowan softball team rode the wave on their way to a pair of victories on the second day at the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic here on Wednesday.

In their opening game, Chowan rallied from an early deficit to defeat Madonna College, 5-2. In game two, the Hawks roared past Trinity International, 11-2.

Megan Leon led the Hawks with a 4-6 effort at the plate with a double and triple to go along with three RBI in two games. Tessa Nicholson and Haleigh Reid posted three hits each. Nicholson collected three doubles and three RBI, while Reid added a triple and a home run with three RBI.

Bailey Wilcox, Abbie Sutton and Madison Dilday posted pinch-hit base hits. Chowan hit .382 as a team with 11 extra base hits.

Wilcox picked up the win in game one. Alex Bishop picked up the win in the nightcap, allowing one hit in 3.0 innings of work. Kendyl Elliott posted a no-decision.

In game one, Madonna would take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a hit and an error.

Chowan would answer in the bottom of the third inning as Kyra Helton reached on an infield single before Leon tripled to put the Hawks on the board. Reid singled up the middle to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.

Madonna rallied to even the score in the fifth inning on three hits.

The Hawks would take advantage of two errors in the bottom of the fifth inning. Caston Garland started the rally with a double down the left field line. Garland would come around to score on an error following a base hit by Helton.

Another error allowed the inning to continue before Nicholson doubled home two runs to lead 5-2.

In game two, Trinity International took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on three hits. Chowan answered in the bottom of the inning as Leon doubled to left before swiping third. Nicholson doubled to left center to score Leon before coming around to score on Serena Riley’s double to left center, tying the game at 2-2.

Kira Soodek started a rally in the second inning with a base hit to right. Elizabeth Heller drew a walk before the runners moved to second and third on a passed ball. An error in the outfield allowed a run to score before Leon plated a pair on a single to left center to lead 5-2.

Riley drew a walk in the third and took second before scoring on Soodek’s infield single to lead 6-2.

Garland tripled to open the fourth and later scored on a RBI groundout to push the advantage to 7-2.

The Hawks added a pair of runs in the fifth inning as Reid tripled to right center. Riley doubled to left center to plate Reid and scored on Sutton’s pinch-hit single up the middle, extending the lead to 9-2.

Chowan would end the contest in the sixth inning as Wilcox picked up a single down the left field line prior to Reid ending the game in run-rule fashion with a no-doubt home run to center.
