SMITHFIELD – John Dew “J. D.” Jones, age 82, formerly of Powellsville, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC.
Mr. Jones was born on September 21, 1940 to Cecil B. Jones and Ruby Mae Oakey Jones in Powellsville, NC. He was a devoted member of Daniels Chapel Free Will Baptist Church in Wilson and was a former Deacon of Powellsville Baptist Church, and Holly Grove Baptist Church. J.D. was the former owner of Jones & Company, which was a cement plant. He was a member of Powellsville Fire Department. He loved to travel to unseen destinations and enjoyed planting flowers in his yard as he kept it in pristine condition always looking amazing. John was loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Judy Jones; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Bayse; a brother, Donald O. Jones; and a sister, Bruce Anne Martin.
John is survived by his wife, Barbara of the home; two sons, John D. Jones, Jr. of Ahoskie, and Michael Merritt (Judy) of Pensacola, FL; two daughters, Chris Fincher (James) of Smithfield, Denise Waller (Brian) of Atmore, AL; two sisters in laws, Linda Hester (John) of Centre, AL, and Cindy Hinton of Clear Water, FL; brother, Cecil B. Jones, Jr. of Ahoskie; sister, Barbara Jean Baldwin (Skip) of Knightdale, NC; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service – Ahoskie Chapel, Ahoskie, NC.
A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Powellsville Baptist Church, Powellsville, NC, with Rev Matt Miles, Rev. Bill Grose, and Pastor Johnny Byrum officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens where J.D. will take his last ride on the Powellsville Fire Truck.
