While it’s not unusual for the temperature to reach the 70’s in February across the Roanoke-Chowan area, when the thermometer hits 80 or more on Feb. 23, people take notice.

Such is the case today (Thursday). By 12 noon, we’ve already equaled the all-time high temperature of 79 degrees that was set back in 1980.

If today’s forecast of 81 degrees holds true, we will set a new record high.

According to the National Weather Service, the average daily high temperature for the Roanoke-Chowan area ranges between 52 to 58 degrees on this date. It rarely falls below 37 degrees on this date and very rarely exceeds 72 degrees.

For reference, on July 21, the hottest day of the year, temperatures at Ahoskie, Tri-County Airport typically range from 70°F to 89°F, while on January 29, the coldest day of the year, they range from 32°F to 51°F.
