JACKSON – Mertis Braswell Edwards, 97, was born February 5, 1926 to Robert Gurnie and Hattie Mae Duke Braswell in Rehoboth, NC. She was called home to be with her Lord on February 17, 2023.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Warren Edwards; a son, Larry Edwards; brothers, Abner, James, and Gurney Braswell; sisters, Louise Slade, Majorie Ricks, Essie Mae Woodard and Jean Edwards.
Mertis and Kelly were married 55 years and enjoyed every minute together with their children, their church, and with their extended camping family. She was a devoted wife and mother who dedicated her life to Rehoboth and her family. She taught the teen Sunday school class for over 40 years and loved helping with the Christmas plays, MYF meetings, cookouts, stews and the choir. She loved her family with all of her heart and truly enjoyed celebrating all occasions with lots of love and food. Decorating the house for Christmas with the family was one of the highlights of her year. She always lit up when a baby or child was in her presence. While keeping a loving home, she had much rather been outdoors in her yard or garden.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Stephen Edwards; her daughters, Betty Lassiter (Wayne), Wanda Burke (Michael); daughter-in-law, Alice Edwards; her grandchildren, Jeff Edwards (Kim), Donika Muckler, Sandy Proctor (Michael), Josh Edwards (Wendy), Michael Lassiter (Connie), Kevin Harrington (Cindy), Karla Harrington; great-grandchildren, Mark (Gia) and Chelsey Edwards, Nathan, Allison, and Alex Muckler, Justin and Braxton Lewter, Brantley and Baylor Edwards, Hunter Lassiter, Bryce Harrington, Tabitha Phillips (Chris), Alden and Hayden Cooke; great-great grandchildren, Mark Edwards, Jr. and Corbin Phillips.
A funeral service to celebrate Mertis’ life will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Rehoboth Church with Rev. Randy Crowder officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 1-1:45 p.m. prior to the service in the chapel of Rehoboth Church, 1101 Rehoboth Church Road, Jackson, NC, 27845, and other times at her home.
Interment will follow in Jackson Cemetery.
