SAN ANTONIO, TX – Betty Mizelle Peele, 87, of 20450 Huebner Road, San Antonio, Texas died Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at her home surrounded by family and friends.

Mrs. Peele, a native of Bertie County, was the daughter of Ballie Durham and Callie Davenport Mizelle. She graduated from Colerain High School in 1953. After graduation she attended secretarial school in Norfolk, Virginia and began a long career of public and private sector positions.

Following her marriage in 1955, the military service duties of her husband, Merritt Edward Peele, carried Betty to assignments across the United States and Asia. Indeed both of her children were born in Okinawa, Japan. After her retirement from West Point Pepperell, she busied herself with volunteer activities and grandmother duties. She moved to San Antonio in 2017 to be near her family and enjoyed an active retirement community lifestyle until her health began to fail.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years; three brothers–B.D., Marvin, and Elwood; daughter, Lydia; and granddaughter, Brynn.

Betty was a loving wife, mother, and Nana. She is survived by her son, Dr. Mark Edward Peele (JoAnne) of San Antonio, TX; her three grandchildren, Merritt Edward Peele (Kimberly) of Houston, TX, Sara Elizabeth Peele Westwood (Mark) of Palo Alto, CA, and Victoria Leigh Barber of Colorado Springs, CO; and her great-grandchild, Laurel Jane Ashworth-Peele.

A celebration of life service at Colerain Baptist Church and a private interment at Hillcrest Cemetery will be planned at a later date.
