Lions spoil Robinson’s big game

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan women’s basketball team stumbled down the stretch in the fourth quarter as Emmanuel spoiled Destiny Robinson’s big day in a 63-50 loss in Conference Carolinas action here Saturday afternoon.

Robinson scored her 1,000th career point in the third quarter from the charity stripe. Robinson collected her eighth double-double of the season and just shy of her second career triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks.

Aniah Patterson added eight points, while Tyaysia Sharpe chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.

Chowan went 1-of-14 from the floor in the fourth quarter and was outscored 18-6 during that pivotal stretch of the game.

After Emmanuel ran out to a 13-5 lead in the early going, Chowan would answer with a 12-4 run as Robinson posted the next two baskets along with four points from Patterson and a jumper by Demetria Bland. Robinson added another jumper as the teams were deadlocked at 17-all.

Emmanuel started the second period much as they did the first period where the visitors used a 10-2 run to build their advantage to 27-19. Robinson notched a layup before Imani Hickman collected a pair from the stripe to end the run.

Jayah King-Johnson picked up a point at the stripe and Patterson hit two jumpers to cut the deficit to 30-26. Neither side scored in the final three minutes of the frame.

Chowan came out of the locker room to start the second half and used a 12-3 run to take the lead, 38-33. Robinson, Hickman, and King-Johnson worked in the paint to collect a basket each. Tyaysia Sharpe added a three-point play and a triple.

King-Johnson and Robinson kept the Hawks in front with a pair from the stripe as Robinson’s first free throw secured her 1,000th career point. Hickman added a layup as Chowan held a 44-38 lead, but Emmanuel ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to regain the lead 45-44.

Emmanuel added to their run to open the fourth quarter as a pair of freebies by Robinson kept the Hawks close, 49-46. The free throws ended a seven minute scoring drought for the Hawks. Robinson would add a jumper for the lone Chowan basket from the floor in the frame.

Chowan (12-7 overall; 8-5 in league play) hosts Francis Marion on Wednesday, Feb. 1. Tip-off is slated for 5 pm.
