CONWAY, NC – Late Sunday evening, the 2nd of October 2022, Robert Lewis Bridgers, Sr., 83, of Conway, passed away at the East Carolina University Health, North Hospital.
“Big Bobby”, as he was affectionately called by those who knew him best, was born on February 27, 1939 to Julian Dalma and Helen Rebecca Burnette Bridgers in Northampton County. He married the love of his life, the former Helen Lucille Matthews, on June 28, 1963. He
was preceded in death by his parents.
Big Bobby was a man of many trades. Not only was he the Owner and Operator of Bridgers Funeral Home in Conway for more than 60 years, but he also served the Town of Conway for over 40 years as Head of Public Works. He was a volunteer fireman with Conway Vol. Fire Department for over 60 years, serving as the Chief from 1969-1976. He was a member of the Pendleton Masonic Lodge No. 418 for over 55 years, twice serving as Master of the Lodge.
Throughout his life, he was active in Boy Scouts and served as Scoutmaster of Troop 39 in Conway for over 15 years. Also, Big Bobby was a lifelong member of the Conway Ruritan Club. All the while, he remained a dedicated family man and strong supporter of the Conway United Methodist Church. A great joy of his was piloting his Cessna 150 airplane whenever his busy schedule allowed; this he called his little vacations.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Helen Bridgers of the home; sons, Bobby Bridgers, Jr. and wife Susan, and George Bridgers and wife Jennifer; grandchildren, Zachary Bridgers, Amanda Hughes and husband Tyler, James Latham, Amber Latham, Monty Bridgers, Abigail Bridgers, and Matthew Bridgers; great-grandchildren, Brindly Latham, Auggie Latham, Lucas Hughes, Elsie Hughes, and Allie Hughes; siblings, Dal Bridgers, and Becky Flynn; and host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 8, 2022 in the sanctuary of the Conway United Methodist Church; 213 S. Church St., Conway, NC. The burial will follow in the Conway Town Cemetery.
The family will gather to receive friends from 6-8 pm on Friday, October 7, 2022 at Bridgers Funeral Home; 605 W. Main St., Conway, NC.
By request of the family, in lieu of flowers, any charitable donation can be made to the Conway Vol. Fire Department; 113 White St, Conway, NC 27820; the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford; 600 College St, Oxford, NC 27565; or the church or charity of your choice.
