AHOSKIE – Local college students are working to gain real work experience at Roanoke-Chowan Community College this summer. This is the first summer the community college has offered temporary positions for college students for ‘on-the-job’ training.

For 10 weeks, these student workers will serve in various positions on campus in departments including human resources, continuing education, academic affairs, administrative and fiscal service, and student services.

“We are pleased to offer worksite experience for our currently enrolled college students, and also for new incoming college students at R-CCC,” states Dr. Murray J. Williams, president of the community college. “These student workers are receiving hands-on experience in the workplace. Our college benefits from the additional staff, as well as the energy and enthusiasm these college students bring to our campus in the summer.”

Students interested in becoming student workers in the summer must apply and be accepted into the program. The 10-week assignments are supervised by college staff and offer students experience in clerical duties, information technology, and accounting. Student workers build their writing and computer skills, as well as learn event-planning, organization and communication skills, and teamwork.

“They are doing a great job,” says Williams. “This is a program we intend to continue in the future.”
