SUNBURY – A local woman was tragically killed in a single vehicle accident near here Friday afternoon.

Carol Ann Wright, 68, of Silver Springs Road, Sunbury, lost her life in the 2:15 p.m. accident. NC Highway Patrol Trooper Z.B. Mize said Wright was less than two miles from her home at the time of the accident.

In his accident report, Mize said Wright was operating a 2005 Toyota passenger car on Silver Springs Road, less than one mile west of Gatling Road. He said her vehicle ran off the right side of the road in a curve, causing the driver to overcorrect, which led to the car traveling off the left side of the road where it struck a ditch and overturned.

Wright was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper Mize stated that exceeding the posted speed (55 mph) and not wearing a seat belt as contributing factors to the deadly accident.

The fatality was the ninth of the year in the Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District II area (Bertie, Gates, and Hertford counties). Four of those fatalities have occurred in Gates County.
