Hawks drop twinbill against Trojans

MURFREESBORO – The Chowan softball team rallied in the nightcap before succumbing to top-ranked Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas action at home on Wednesday afternoon.

Chowan suffered an 18-1 loss in five innings in the opener, but bounced back to play the Trojans on near even terms in game two.

Jesse Gentry and Haleigh Reid posted two hits each to lead Chowan in the twinbill. Gentry tallied a double with two RBI. Mya Horne, Hannah Eden, Serena Riley, Kaitlin Brunelli, and Meredith Morgan added one hit each. Riley launched a home run.

In game two, the Trojans scored a run in the first three innings of the contest to lead 3-0.

Riley opened the bottom of the third inning with a lead-off home run to left field to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Chowan continued their comeback with a two-out rally in the home half of the fourth frame. There, Courtney Lamb drew a walk, and Reid singled and moved to second on the throw as Lamb advanced to third. Gentry brought home the pair with a double off the left center field fence to even the score at 3-all.

Chowan had a chance in the fifth to take the lead as Horne drew a walk. Horne moved to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch before being left stranded.

Mount Olive took advantage of an error in the top of the sixth as the Trojans plated two runs on the next batter to lead 5-3.

Eden drew a walk in the bottom of the sixth inning before being erased on a double play. Reid picked up a single in the inning.

Horne singled in the bottom of the seventh before being left stranded at first.

Chowan wraps up the regular season with a pair of league series as the Hawks host Southern Wesleyan on Friday and North Greenville on Saturday.
