Martin breaks career points mark in loss at Barton

WILSON – In a preview of a potential opening round of the Conference Carolinas tournament, the Chowan men’s lacrosse team came up just short in a furious fourth quarter comeback against Barton, falling 19-17 here Saturday afternoon.

Jaxon Martin paced the offense with 10 points, recording six goals and four assists. With the 10 points in the contest, Martin became the all-time points leader for the Hawks with 146 career points.

Jackson Downs added four goals, while Jason Jenkins II and Sullivan Prince added two goals each.

Noah Jalal and Erik Dozzi notched one goal and three assists each. Eric George tallied one goal and one assist.

Alec Rodopoulos stopped 15 shots in goal.

Downs put the Hawks on the board in the first quarter off an assist by Jalal before Martin scored a pair of goals, including a man-up goal off an assist by Dozzi, to put the Hawks up 3-1.

Dozzi would find Jenkins for a score to offset the Barton score. The Bulldogs evened the score at 4-all before Downs scored an unassisted goal to lead 5-4 at the end of the opening period.

Barton rallied to score four of the first five goals in the second frame to lead 8-6. Prince found the back of the net off an assist by Martin to lead 6-5 before three straight goals by Barton. Jenkins ended the run with an unassisted goal, but the Bulldogs led 10-7 at intermission.

Martin found the back of the net off an assist by George to open the scoring in the third frame. Jalal then scored a goal to cut the deficit to 10-9.

Barton scored three unanswered goals before Martin found Prince for the goal, trimming Chowan’s deficit to 13-10.

The Bulldogs finished off the frame with four goals to lead 17-10.

Chowan started the comeback in the early stages of the fourth quarter where Martin scored following a failed clear attempt. Martin would then find George for a goal before Martin scored off an assist by Jalal to close the gap to 17-13. Jalal and Martin connected again, five seconds into the man-up opportunity, to trail 17-14.

Barton extended their lead with a pair of goals, 19-14, before Dozzi scored off an assist by Martin. Downs took advantage of the extra-man to score as Jenkins delivered the assist.

Downs scored the final goal in the contest off an assist by Dozzi with 2:41 remaining. Chowan would force a shot clock violation late but was unable to find the back of the net on the possession.

Chowan hits the road to take on Lees-McRae in the regular season finale on Saturday, April 23.
