COMO – Mary Augustine (Stephenson) Hammel was born March 18th, 1933 in Como, NC.  She passed away April 9th, 2022 in Norfolk, VA.

Mary was the daughter of the late E. Frank Stephenson, Sr. and his wife Lucye. Mary was a 1951 graduate of Murfreesboro High School and 1955 graduate of East Carolina University. Mary taught public school in Norfolk and Chesapeake for 30 years. Along with her late husband, George A. Hammel, she was a charter member of Great Bridge Presbyterian Church. Mary was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 66 years and had served in the office of Worthy Matron. Mary was a dual member of Order of Eastern Star Emera Chapter #19 in Seaboard, NC and Order of the Eastern Star Berkeley Chapter #52 in Norfolk, VA.

Mary was very involved in her community. She was a longtime Meals on Wheels Volunteer, was a Chesapeake Master Gardener Emeritus, and was active in the Plant a Row for the Hungry program. Mary was also a member of and participated in numerous other groups and organizations.

She is survived by her brother, E. Frank Stephenson, Jr.; her sister, Elizabeth S. Jenkins; brother-in-law, Quinton R. Jenkins; and many nieces and nephews. Mary touched countless lives with her incredible service to others and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 23rd at 11 a.m. Memorial donations can be made on her behalf to the House of Blessing, 525 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
