AHOSKIE – Police here are seeking the public’s assistance to help them identify the person responsible for shooing a 13-year-old on Saturday evening.

Ahoskie Police Chief Jimmy Asbell said the victim suffered a gunshot wound to the back while walking south in the 100 block of North Catherine Creek Road.

“We received a ‘shots fired’ call in that general area at around 7:55 p.m. on March 5,” Asbell said. “The first officer to arrive on the scene found the gunshot victim lying on the sidewalk. The victim was able to tell us that he didn’t know who shot him or the direction from where the shot was fired.”

The victim, Asbell said, was initially transported to Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. He was later airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.

“I don’t believe his injuries are life-threatening,” Asbell stated.

Asbell said those with information to share about the shooting are encouraged to contact the Ahoskie Police Department at 252-332-5011. Detectives Tom Helm and Stephen White are handling the investigation.

Additionally, Asbell thanked deputies with the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Vidant Police Department for assisting his staff.
