Jones powers Hawks to season sweep over Mt. Olive

MOUNT OLIVE – Monique Jones had a career-night here Tuesday, posting a double-double as Chowan University used a 73-68 win to complete a season sweep of Mount Olive in Conference Carolinas basketball action.

Jones scored a career-high 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting while adding 11 rebounds to collect a double-double. Destiny Robinson added 17 points and nine rebounds; Tyaysia Sharpe had 11 points and Olivia Gaither collected 12 rebounds.

The Chowan defense held the Trojans to 29.3% (24-of-82) shooting in the contest.

Chowan would turn the ball over 31 times leading to 20 points for Mount Olive. The last time the Hawks turned the ball over 30+ times and won was exactly two years ago, Feb. 22, 2020 against Lees-McRae in a 71-68 victory.

Chowan opened the contest on a 7-0 run as Jones knocked down a pair of jumpers before Gaither collected a three-point play. That helped Chowan gain a 17-11 advantage by the end of the opening period.

Mount Olive notched the opening two baskets of the second period to close the gap to 17-15. Sharpe would connect from deep to take the lid off the rim for Chowan. Gaither hit a putback layup to extend the lead to 22-15.

Both teams spent time at the stripe in the final portion of the period as Robinson added a pair from the line to lead 31-25. Jones added a jumper from the elbow and a jumper from the midrange. Jones picked up a pair at the stripe to lead 37-27.

Keibra Hopkins added a point from the stripe to send the Hawks into the locker room at halftime with a 38-29 advantage.

Jones would continue her career night putting the Hawks on the board quickly in the second half. The Trojans scored the next five points before Sharpe added a jumper. Aniah Patterson picked up a point at the stripe to lead 43-34.

Patterson pushed the lead back to double-figures with the old-fashioned three-point play, 46-36. Robinson recorded a layup off an assist from Sharpe. Robinson added a pair from the stripe to continue the run as the Hawks built a 51-37 lead.

The Trojans scored the next six points to cut the deficit back to single-digits, 51-43. Sharpe slowed the run with a free throw before ending the run with a triple to push the advantage back to double-digits, 55-43.

Patterson knocked down a triple from the left corner as the Trojans collected points from the stripe before Jones secured a layup to lead 60-50 at the end of the frame.

Mount Olive opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to four, 60-56. Robinson ended the run with a layup, and then added another layup to push the advantage to 64-56.

Chowan and Mount Olive failed to score over the next four minutes. UMO hit a putback layup before the Trojans put the Hawks at the line. Sharpe picked up two points at the stripe with less than a minute to play.

Robinson and Shequana Jackson split a pair from the stripe to lead 68-60 with 36.8 remaining. Jackson added another from the stripe before Trojans connected from deep to cut the deficit to 69-63.

Jones knocked down two from the charity stripe with 15.2 remaining, 71-63. The Trojans would score the next five points to cut the deficit to three, 71-68, with 5.2 remaining. Jones salted away the victory at the stripe with a pair of free throws with 2.5 remaining.

Chowan, who improved to 16-9 overall and 16-7 in league play, wraps up the regular season with a Conference Carolinas contest against King on Thursday, February 24. Tip-off is slated for 5 pm.
